The Northern Cape Provincial Legislature has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening its longstanding relationship with the Consulate-General of the People’s Republic of China in Cape Town, with a renewed focus on youth empowerment, capacity building and addressing socio-economic challenges in the province.

The commitment was expressed during a courtesy meeting between the Speaker of the Northern Cape Provincial Legislature and the Consul-General of the People’s Republic of China, held on the sidelines of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Conference.

The meeting was also attended by representatives from the Chinese Consulate, as well as the Secretary to the Northern Cape Provincial Legislature, Mr Patrick Moopela, and members of the Legislature’s team.

Addressing the gathering, the Speaker highlighted that the engagement was not the beginning of a new relationship, but rather a continuation of diplomatic and developmental ties that have existed for more than a decade.

The Speaker acknowledged the role played by former Speaker Hon. Newrene Klaaste in establishing a strong relationship with the Chinese Consulate, particularly during the tenure of former Consul-General His Excellency Mr Wen’Ze.

According to the Speaker, the partnership has previously resulted in financial assistance that supported several youth empowerment initiatives identified through the Office of the Speaker.

Among the projects that benefited were the provision of computer equipment to a high school in Kimberley, musical instruments for a youth organisation in Calvinia in the Hantam District, and assistance to 10 young people from Kakamas and Springbok to obtain their learners’ and drivers’ licences.

The Speaker also recalled the former Consul-General Mr Wen’Ze’s continued participation in the Northern Cape’s annual State of the Province Address (SoPA), regardless of where the event was hosted.

The Northern Cape Provincial Legislature has adopted a rotational approach to hosting the SoPA across the province’s five districts, aimed at ensuring that residents throughout the vast province have greater exposure to the work of the Legislature, as well as the law-making process.

The Speaker further noted that relationships have also been established with representatives of the Chinese Republic in several districts of the Northern Cape.

The Legislature said these longstanding interactions demonstrate the potential for the partnership to be further expanded.

The Speaker expressed the hope that the renewed engagement would provide a platform for deeper cooperation, particularly in the areas of capacity building and youth empowerment.

The partnership, the Speaker said, could play a role in supporting efforts to address inequality, poverty and unemployment, particularly among young people in the Northern Cape.

The courtesy meeting was described as an opportunity to lay the foundation for the next chapter of cooperation between the Northern Cape Provincial Legislature and the Chinese Consulate in Cape Town.

With the relationship having already delivered several youth-focused initiatives over the past decade, the Legislature expressed its intention to build on this foundation and explore further opportunities for collaboration that could contribute to the development of communities across the Northern Cape.
