The Northern Cape Provincial Legislature has elected Honourable Fufe Makatong, MPL, as the new Speaker of the House.
The election took place during a Special Sitting of the Legislature on Tuesday, 1 September 2026, and was presided over by the Judge President of the Northern Cape Division of the High Court, Judge Lazarus Pule Tlaletsi. The election follows the resignation of the former Speaker, Newrine Klaaste, and ushers in a new phase of leadership for the 7th Northern Cape Provincial Legislature.
As Speaker, Honourable Makatong will provide leadership to the proceedings of the House and oversee the effective functioning of the Legislature in accordance with the Constitution, the Rules of the Northern Cape Provincial Legislature and other applicable legislation.
The election of the new Speaker takes place as the Legislature continues to fulfil its constitutional mandate of law-making, oversight over the provincial executive and facilitating public participation in the legislative process.
