On Monday, 29 May 2023 all Members of the Provincial Legislature attended a Briefing Session by the Independent Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC) on the determination of the number of Provincial Legislature seats and the implications of the Electoral Amendment Act (Nr 01 of 2023).
The purpose of the engagement was to consult all Members of the Provincial Legislature (MPLs) on the process and guiding principles to determine the number of seats in legislatures ahead to the National and Provincial Elections in 2024. In terms, schedule 3 to the Electoral Act, it provides that the Commission must determine the number of seats in legislatures ahead of each National and Provincial Election.
The current number of seats allocated to the Northern cape provinces is 30. The IEC during this consulatative session informed the Northern Cape Provincial Legislature (NCPL) that it has until the 5 June 2023 to submits its submission to the Commission on the number of seat requirement and thereafter the Commission will advertise and call for public submission from experts, key stakeholders and interested parties and after these consultations the Commission will make its determination.
