In its dedication to fostering accountability, transparency and service delivery within the province, officials from the Northern Cape Provincial Legislature conducted a pre-oversight visit to the Northern Cape Department of Cooperative Governance, Human Settlements and Traditional Affairs (NCCOGHSTA).
The visit was conducted on Monday, 27 January in the John Taolo Gaetsewe District, to assess the department and gather information on the progress and challenges in the implementation of its programs. During the visit, officials engaged with the department representatives as well as Ga-Segonyana Local Municipality Manager about the Wrenchville RDP Housing project, Donkerhoek water project in Gantatelang and the seven disaster relief houses in 7 Miles.
Speaking on the Wrenchville RDP Housing project is Mr. Katleho Senokoane, the project’s contractor. According to Senokoane construction on the project has been suspended due to financial constraints “For now there is no construction taking place. We are having a challenge, since we claimed last year. The inception date of the claim was on the 28th of November last year – until today we haven’t been paid”, Senokoane explained.
Despite these setbacks, the project’s deadline remains unchanged, with completion expected by May 21, 2025. The Donkerhoek water project, one of the three projects identified in the district, is successfully completed. The project includes an 80kl steel tank with 42 standpipes, supplied by two boreholes. According to Ga-Segonyana Local Municipality’s Acting Director of Infrastructure, Mr. Kgosieng, the project commenced in September 2023 and was completed on September 30, 2024.
One of the seven disaster relief houses in 7miles was also visited on the day. These houses were constructed in response to the severe floods that affected the area in 2021, as explained by Mr. Molusi, John Taolo District Municipality’s Director Basic Services Infrastructure.
